Artist Interview: WolfTongue

I recently sat down for an interview with Leben Bleasdale, singer and sole member of Sacramento band WolfTongue. It was a great chance to get in the mindset and process of creating a seamless work of art, like the band’s new EP “Young Haunts”.

VT: What local and professional bands inspired you during the creation of “Young Haunts”?
LB: As far as professional bands go I had a vast range of influences; too many to even recall. I certainly took something away from (them all), but primarily, Daphne Loves Derby, and The Dangerous Summer.

Creative Emissions: “Where Your Eyes Don’t Go” – Dismantling They Might Be Giants

For those of you who do not know, my day job is supervising a trail crew with the American Conservation Experience. I travel around to different national parks, and other government lands, doing trail construction and maintenance. This means that I spend about 200 days per year in a tent. I have developed quite a morning routine in my nomadic travels.

I wake up each day at about 4:50am and make myself some coffee in my tent. Before I go to bed each night, I line out my arsenal of coffee paraphernalia, like a heroin addict with his needles, tubes, etc. I make sure I’ve got my French press, water bottle, jet boil stove and, of course, my fair trade organic hipster coffee. When the digital rooster in my alarm clock crows, I roll over, still in my sleeping bag and spark up my stove. When the coffee is ready, I sit up in my sleeping bag like a paraplegic caterpillar. I sip my coffee, read some comics, write, or simply listen to some music.

Every Atlas – Peeled Back

Now it begins with the strumming of a guitar, followed by the picking of a bass and beat of a drum. Then, we hear a pair of voices unlike any heard in the show so far. Creative lyrics, epic sounds, and beautiful harmonies saturate every element of their music. Of course, I’m describing the band we’ve all come to know and love as Every Atlas.

Last summer  I was at a pool party, and as the afternoon turned into the evening, we (under the influence of pizza and light beer) began talking about things that scared the hell out of us when we were kids.

While there were standard ghost stories, tales of haunted schools, and mythical suburban legends; we noticed an unnerving trend among the subjects of our discourse (Look, fancy words!).  A lot of things that terrified us are from seventies pop culture.  I’m not event talking about the stuff people would flip out about after getting high.
